Report from Dewayne and Rita Shappley

For the month of November, 2014

An open Bible against an esoteric background of water and celestial space illustrates the Shappley Report for November, 2014, in editoriallapaz.

-Bayamon, Puerto Rico church of Christ. Francisco Miranda baptized. Nov. 16, 2014. Francisco is 84 years old. He is the father of Jeannette Miranda, who stopped attending services years ago, but has now returned. And, he is the grandfather of Christie Báez, who was baptized in April, 2014, together with Juan Carlos, who would become her husband two weeks later. There is an obvious connection between the baptism of Christie and Juan Carlos, and their faithfulness, to the return of Christie’s mother and her grandfather’s decision to be baptized. It is a joy to see these family members thus reunited, especially in the bonds of Christ. Francisco is the twelfth person to be baptized in Bayamon during the year 2014.

-Rita and I returned to Puerto Rico, Thursday, November 20.

E-mails and Notes reveal much about the material on our sites and positive reactions to it.

-Place not identified. Nov. 01, 2014. “Congratulations. The subject is very beautiful and well expressed.”José Francisco Ávila Gutiérrez  Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/mensaje_pensamientos.htm"

-The Referer points to the full-text sermon “Me, and My Thoughts; You, and Yours,” the chief focus being on how to control bad, negative, destructive thoughts. Unless otherwise noted, subject material on our sites were prepared by me, as was this one.

-Place not identified. Nov. 02, 2014. Excellent material. May God continue blessing you day after day, so that you may continue the marvelous work you are doing.” José

-Santiago, Dominican Republic. Nov. 03, 2014. “I want to express my thanks for your love, the work you do for God and for dedicating time to share with me by this means. I heard you in a conference given by you in Ensanche Ozama, Santo Domingo, in the late seventies. I belong to the congregation in Cienfuegos, of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, and I always look for material for Bible studies and the preparation of brethren for the ministry. Thank you for your willingness to cooperate with us.” Miguel López Torro

-I distinctly remember to this day preaching for the church in Cienfuegos (Hundred Fires, in English), on the outskirts of Santiago, and for the one in Santiago, second largest city of the Dominican Republic. And for another in the Vietnam sector of that city. That was decades ago! It was my privilege to preach many times for the Ozama church in Santo Domingo, including the inauguration meeting for the large meeting place the congregation there has occupied for many years.

-Flores, Petén, Guatemala. Nov. 04, 2014. “I would like to be a part of the church of Christ, but do not know if there are congregations in San Andrés, Petén, Guatemala.” Cruz Alberto Reynoso

-We sent Cruz Alberto contact information for churches of Christ in Guatemala.

-Place not identified. Nov. 06, 2014. “The presentation in PowerPoint is very good, but you are very wrong when you say that Jesus is the rider of the white horse of Revelation 6:1-2.” Raúl Durán  Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/apocalipsis_3_PowerPoint.htm"

-Pentecostals have the convoluted interpretation that Jesus Christ is not the rider who goes forth conquering, and to conquer, on his white horse because, as they say, arrows are not mentioned in the text, just the bow. Mr. Durán does not benefit us with his explanation, but I know what he probably believes: That the rider is an unbelieving, very astute, but evil entity that will conquer nations by means of political-economic alliances, without making war. My personal conviction is that the rider is, indeed, Christ and that arrows are to be understood as necessary for the bow to be effective, for who would go forth to conquer with just a bow and no arrows. The implied “arrows” would be divine truth, including prophetical warnings, etc. Interestingly, Psalm 45:4 speaks of riding forth on the word of truth, humility and justice.

-Cartago, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Nov. 06, 2014. “I congratulate you for so much blessing.”Jairo Antonio López Ospina. Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/espiritu-santo-ocho-grandiosas-bendiciones-2-uncion.html"

-The Referer points to “The Unction of the Holy Spirit,” one of the studies on “Blessings of the Holy Spirit.”

-Naples, Florida. Nov. 08, 2014. Bro. Roberto Salazar, of Naples, Florida, attended conferences “just for men of the church”, sponsored by the West Broward, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Spanish-speaking congregation during the time Rita and I were with our son and family in Coral Springs. He came to me, explaining how he used material on our Internet site for multiple purposes such as for Bible classes and sermons. During the conversation, he mentioned churches of Christ in Bolivia, observing that the site had helped churches there not to fall into apostasy, and adding that the same was true of churches in other places. His evaluation was that the material on the site is balanced, not being liberal nor extremely conservative. Indeed, he had much praise for the contents of the site. Despite not being on support, Roberto has established four works in the area of Naples.

-Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. Nov. 15, 2014. There are several Spanish-speaking churches of Christ in South Florida. The one in West Broward sponsored a Christian men’s meeting all day, Nov. 8. About 120 men attended. The theme was “Constructing the Complete Christian Man.” I taught the Wednesday night class this week at West Broward, and am scheduled to teach again next Wednesday. Bro. Carlos Preciado, of the Pampano church, wants me to teach classes all one day on “Doctrines of the Church.” Perhaps we can arrange for those classes once we are established in Broward County. According to Internet data, there are approximately 500,000 Spanish-speaking people in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale-Coral Springs-Tamarac, Boca Raton and other cities).

-Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Nov. 18, 2014. “Pardon, brother, I am experiencing certain problems with my brothers with regard to their accepting sound doctrine. I would like your help with regard to the subject in Matthew 12:32. They say if I do not recognize dreams and manifestations of the Holy Spirit, as taught by Pentecostals, I am blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. I would be thankful for your help.” Ángel Reyna Díaz

-Having published an abundance of materials on this and related subjects on the Internet, I opted to explain to Ángel how to find them quickly by using the Google Search feature set up specifically for the site editoriallapaz. As an example, on the search form I entered key words such as “blasfemia contra el Espíritu Santo,” and almost instantly a list of studies, etc. appeared. I sent the first three on the list to Ángel, as well as specific links for studies on the Holy Spirit and the duration of spiritual gifts. This is one of the blessings of this technology of the Internet: Not having to write once again that which is already available two or three clicks away!

Corozal, Puerto Rico. Nov. 22, 2014. Miguel Rivera called to say he rejoiced to find our site, explaining that he has been searching for the truth during many years. He wants to attend, but presently does not have a car, and lives out in the country some distance from the town, which is about fifteen minutes from Bayamon. Later, Miguel and I talked again by phone, and he has spoken by phone several times with Luis Sardina, one of the leaders of the Bayamon church. The man has investigated all kinds of churches and religions, without, apparently, becoming a member of any one. I encouraged him to study the section of basic doctrines in editoriallapaz.

Miguel must be one of the few people on this island who does not have a car, or two, or three! Waiting about 45 minutes in line to get the renewal license for our car (which we should have received by mail, but did not), another man also waiting said there are 6 million vehicles on this island registered to 3 million people! Certainly must be an exaggeration, but the number of vehicles on the roads here would tend to make one think he was close to right.

-Ciudad Real, Spain. Nov. 26, 2014. “My name is Jenaro Redero Prieto, pastor of the church of Christ in Ciudad Real, Spain. I have read your article ‘Present Day Pentecostalism’ and think it stupendous. I am writing a book and would like to use it, if possible.”  Jenaro Redero

-In Spain, some churches identifying themselves as “churches of Christ” actually have organizations and practices more typical of evangelical churches. This, according to no small amount of information sent by churches or preachers there who follow more closely the teachings of Christ and his apostles. We are not too surprised, then, that Jenaro calls himself “pastor of the church of Christ in Ciudad Real.”
